Sisterhood: Shu ling on Soft Hours

Made from memories, to last

Sisterhood,

a Samfu story, featuring Shu ling

Our Sisterhood series continues - bringing to you conversations with women that share nostalgia, cultural roots and a creative flair. We speak to a familiar face for Dear Samfu - Shu ling (@shuls.hua) - as a mother of two, she embodies gentleness, warmth and strength.

Shu Ling has walked a path of similar to us having cofounded basisclothing. Last year, we came up with the idea of doing a collaboration with her and the capsule is finally launched online! She was the first creator that came to mind because her style feels effortless, and the way she shares herself has always felt honest. It felt like the right way to introduce a new side of Dear Samfu while still staying true to who we are.

Shu ling shares about her journey working with Dear Samfu on Soft Hours.

Behind the collection name

“Soft Hours” came from the idea of slowing down and cherishing the quieter moments in life — the kind that often become memories before we realise it. The collection was inspired by nostalgic everyday moments: morning light through the windows, old parks my parents used to bring me to, home routines, and the moments I have to myself through different seasons of womanhood. We wanted the pieces to feel gentle, familiar, and comforting — something you would reach for without thought, yet still feel completely yourself in. Watch Shu ling narrate behind the scenes on IG

On her personal style

Romantic, nostalgic, effortless.

On agreeing to collab

I’ve always admired Dear Samfu’s ability to create pieces that feel timeless yet wearable in everyday life. I especially love how they never shy away from colours and prints. Our aesthetics naturally complemented each other — we both appreciate sentimental details, comfort, and clothing that feels lived in and tells a story. It felt like a very organic collaboration where we could blend both our worlds into something meaningful.

The Dear Samfu sisters are also incredibly kind and warm. Every interaction we had at events felt easy and comfortable, so when they approached me about the collaboration, it was a very natural “yes” from me.

On a memorable experience during the collab

It was the very first time the three of us met. I remember how naturally we gravitated towards the same fabrics and details, and how easy it was to agree on the overall direction of the collection. I think that was the moment I knew it was going to be really special working with the Dear Samfu sisters.

On her favourite piece

The House Blouse has a special place in my heart. It was designed with inspiration from Dear Samfu’s archived House Dress, then made more romantic with pleated details and a gentle puffed sleeve. I love how versatile it is — romantic with the collar on, but simpler and more effortless without it. It feels very representative of the collection as a whole: soft, nostalgic, yet still easy to wear in everyday life.

On a memory of grandma

My grandma is 99 this year, and her most common phrase is “感谢主” — “Thank God.” My grandpa passed away early, and none of my siblings or I ever got to meet him. Yet despite living through war times and carrying so much hardship in life, she has always remained quietly strong and deeply optimistic. Watching her live with gratitude in every circumstance has really shaped the way I see life, and continues to remind me to approach each season with thanksgiving.
