Sisterhood: Su Fern & Su Wern on laughter & tough love

Sisterhood,

a Samfu story, snapped by Su Fern & Su Wern

We're kickstarting our Sisterhood series on our Samfu Stories blog - bringing to you conversations with women that share nostalgia, cultural roots and a creative flair. This month, we’re peeking into the tight sisterly bond of Su Fern - a beauty marketer by day & Su Wern - a multi-hatted church worker.

Having had the pleasure of interviewing Su Fern during our rebranding project, we found her dynamism, amicable personality so attractive - we are instantly drawn into her world & craved to meet her sister too.

On sisterhood

Su Fern ("Fern"): Our bond has been forged through our sheer differences be it our personality, talents, or preferences-  it’s through appreciating each other in our differences that somehow also makes us confident in who we are individually.

Su Wern ("Su"): Our bond has also been forged through forgiveness and our flaws. The bond is strong only because we have worked through some difficult conflicts, recognising our failings and being willing to change with the help of God. It’s allowing the other person to be a mirror to yourself, seeing things you don’t always want to see but need to see in order for you to grow and be a better sister and person.

On admiring each other

Su: I love Fern's zest for life and a wonder for discovery and new things and adventure. She laughs a lot and is definitely responsible for 80% of the laughter in my life. Most of the 80% of laughter is nervous laughter because I have no idea what tormenting idea she has up her sleeve to annoy me.

Fern: Su's witty one liners, killer fierce (she's a tiger!) death stares and tough love. She has the ability to speak the truth and hard things in love, while being tender and gentle to hold space for me.

On each other's personal style

Su: Fern’s style has lots of color and unique touches of accessories or patterns that gives her own unique stamp - she has definitely influenced my style. If not for her, I would still be wearing black, blues and browns only. It was one thing she said that totally changed the way I saw my clothes “Why do you always have to wear the same top with the same skirt?” It was like a lightbulb went off. I definitely steal some of her style ideas and make it my own.

Fern: Su is so... corporate! HAHA I tease! Classic, elegant, practical dresser! Has great buildable wardrobe pieces. There was a season in my life I had to borrow a couple of her darker / muted garments. Who would have thought I lived to see the day? It's great that we're almost the same size and we share our wardrobes!

On their go-to cafe order

Su: A warm pastry and a hot cup of coffee for me.

Fern: Same! Can't go wrong with a savoury flaky pastry and a good cup of coffee - flat white or filter ideally full body with chocolatey or nutty tasting notes, sans acidity. Also a bowl of comforting noodles, matcha, ice tea, I'm so hungry thinking about food right now...
